I'm not The Everything Man.
I can’t be everything all the time.
In the days when I did, I was just a kid,
and most of the time, I was lying.
But I'm not the everything man.
I've only got some things sometimes.
And I can bring them to you in a shade of blue,
but I’ll take my time.
You want the everything. I don’t have everything,
but I've got something sometimes.
But when you can't get everything, oh, it's a tragedy!
I've been everywhere and nowhere.
Nowhere suits me just fine.
And I dumped all the wine, and the cat’s not around,
but I guess I'm grounded fine.
Some guy said "Be Here Now,"
but I'll be somewhere else, some other time.
Like the days when I had just a sleeping bag
and ate breathing for a time.
You want the everything. I don’t have everything,
but I've got something sometimes.
But when you can't get everything, oh, it's a tragedy!
If lonely is only the way,
I can take it if you don’t come by.
In a secretive way, then my brain doesn't have to say
everything.
And I’m not The Anything Man,
but I’ve got everything on the inside.
So to me I stay true, in my shades of blue,
and I guess I'm breathing.
'Cause I don’t want anything.
Inside I've got everything,
and I’ve got some things sometimes.
But when you can't have everything,
oh, it's a tragedy!
